Rust’s storage unit has been converted into an office, in the classic crazy-conspiracy-theorist style: There are maps on the walls with strings running between them, photos of victims, official police documents on clipboards, antlers, stick sculptures-which Marty is forced to duck under, just like at Ledoux’s compound-and other evidence of Rust’s obsessiveness. They thought they’d solved a crime, when in reality, they left the murderers free to kill again. And the worst one, the sin of omission-or "inattention," as Marty phrased it in a previous episode. This is the scene in which we finally learn that these guys are not the murderers, that their sins have been committed largely on one another. Rust shines a bright photographer’s light into his face and calmly asks, "Whatcha packing?" Rust is telling Marty that neither of them has anything to hide anymore. As Rust descends into the darkness of his metal box, Marty stealthily pulls out his gun. Storage units can be so sinister: each one identical, big enough for a body, the contents known only to the owner. Marty reluctantly agrees to accompany Rust to his storage unit, the one he wouldn’t open for detectives Papania and Gilbough. In a later bar scene, after Marty comes on board, you’ll notice that he’s the one with a dartboard in the frame. The dartboard behind Rust is a nice touch: he’s the one’s already focused on a target. It continues at a bar, where the two men sit on opposite sides of the table, collars open, deceptively casual, just two alcoholics having a beer. It started last week, with Rust pulling his truck up behind Marty on the highway. As the events of the present unfold, they’re watching the events of the past happen all over again. Now they’re walking the same path all over again, in an ever-widening gyre. They started on the inside of the spiral, and from 1995 to 2012, they traveled a full loop. To get a sense of what’s going on with time here, imagine Marty and Rust walking along one of those spirals that’s tattooed on the back of the victims. "After You’ve Gone" is the most linear _True Detective _episode yet, and the first to unfold mainly in the present (that being 2012). With the re-opening of the Dora Lange investigation, the story of Rust and Marty has come full circle.
